INDIAN SHORES — A St. Petersburg, FL woman was seriously injured by a boat propeller after she jumped into the Intracoastal Waterway to fetch her hat, deputies said.

It happened off the Park Boulevard Boat Ramp at 2:20 p.m. Saturday, deputies said.

The injured woman, 27, was one of four people on a boat that had just departed from the ramp when the pilot, 36, of Seminole, slowed down to adjust the trim on the motor, deputies said.

The accident victim's hat flew into the water after the boat coasted into some rocks and as the driver pushed off in idle speed, deputies said.

The pilot was not aware that the boating victim went into the water, deputies said. She was hit by the boat, pulled under it and then back up, sheriff's deputies said.

The boating victim suffered deep cuts on her left leg caused by the propeller, deputies said. She was taken to Bayfront Medical Center with serious but not life-threatening injuries.

One of the passengers, 27, of St. Petersburg, jumped into the water and pulled Rienerth aboard, deputies said.

Another passenger on the boat, 37, of Largo, was not injured, deputies said...
